Delaware To Become Second State To Launch Sports Betting

Delaware To Become Second State To Launch Sports BettingDelaware has announced that the state will go live with sports betting next week, making it the second state behind Nevada to offer single-game wagering.

In a new release, Governor John Carney announced that sports wagering will start at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5th. This comes ahead of states like Mississippi, West Virginia, Rhode Island, and New Jersey that also preemptively legalized sports gambling ahead of the Murphy vs. NCAA ruling.

“Delaware has all necessary legal and regulatory authority to move forward with a full-scale sports gaming operation, and we look forward to next week’s launch,” stated Carney. “We’re hopeful that this will bring even more visitors into Delaware to see firsthand what our state has to offer.”

You may recall that the Supreme Court recently ruled that PASPA was unconstitutional, violating the anti-commandeering provisions of the Tenth Amendment. Delaware, along with Montana, Oregon, and Nevada, were the only states exempt from the law.

Though Delaware has been authorized to offer their sports lottery for more than a decade, PASPA did stop the state from legalizing single-game wagering as the state had no regulatory framework in place prior to PASPA going into effect. As such, Nevada held a monopoly over sports gambling in the United States.

Delaware attempted to offer single-game wagering by signing a sports betting law back in 2009. The sports leagues filed a lawsuit against the state and won, putting the state’s sports betting expansion on hold.
However, when the federal ban on sports betting was lifted, DE HB 100 officially went into effect. That paired with the state’s exisiting sports betting infrastructure made for an easy transition to offer full-scale sports wagering.

Sports fans in the state will be able to place sports wagers at three locations: Delaware Park, Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, and Harrington Raceway & Casino.

Sports that patrons can bet on include NBA, MLB, NFL, and NHL events, along with motor sports, golf, and soccer.

This means that bettors in the state have the opportunity to bet on the NBA Finals, with sportsbooks already having the Golden State Warriors as a heavy favorite. The spread at BetOnline Sportsbook is 12 points for Game 1 of the Finals, with the Cleveland Cavaliers moneyline +475. You can compare the odds at your local Delaware sportsbook.
